What I’ve been doing on… Housing

Better housing, and more of it, has been one of my top priorities since the election. Too many people in our area can’t get on the housing ladder or are stuck with sky high rents.

The Government has taken action with our planning and infrastructure bill to get Britain building and our renters rights bill which among other measures will end no-fault evictions.

Anglia Square

Locally, I’m so pleased to have seen our campaign to unlock Anglia Square, and build social and affordable housing progress, with £34 million of government funding awarded to Norwich City Council earlier this year.

Since then, Aviva have said they’ll invest 350 million pounds into the redevelopment of the site, which will create 3,500 additional jobs in the area.

Building new homes sustainably

When building new homes, it’s important we do so sustainably, and with proper community infrastructure in place.

I’ve spoken with constituents about a number of issues on new build estates, including lack of road adaptations, and play areas that have been promised but not delivered, and I’ve been holding developers to account.

New homes must come with proper community infrastructure from schools to GP surgeries – I’ve been speaking with developers on these issues, and raising them in Parliament.

Warm Homes

We also need sustainable and energy efficient homes – which is why I welcome the £17 million pound Government grant awarded to Norwich City Council in order to support local people with warm home improvements, like insulation and heat pumps.

Listening and supporting you

Alongside my recently I held Housing Forum for local people, alongside councillors and council officers, I’ll be organising more events like this in the future. My office also regularly supports local people facing issues around housing.

I will continue to push for better housing in Norwich North, for everyone.
